Kosmos Energy announces major gas discovery off the coast of Senegal

Yakkar-1 is the first of four wells situated approximately 95km north-west of Dakar at 2,550m water depth and drilled to a total depth of nearly 4,700m. Kosmos Energy announced that the well has intersected a gross hydrocarbon column of 120m in three pools within the primary lower Cenomanian objective and encountered 45m of net pay.

Estimates predicts that the discovery contains approximately 15 trillion cubic feet of gross mean gas complying with the pre-drill expectations.

Gas samples preliminary analysis suggests that the Yakkar-1 founded a gas with a condensate-to-gas ratio (GCR) in the same range as previously found at Tortue and Teranga - approximately 15-30 barrels per million standard cubic feet.

Tortue field gas is due to begin flowing in 2021 and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility will be responsible for exporting it.
