Standing around 37 kms from Borkum island in Germany’s North sea coast and equipped with 78 Siemens turbines, the 312 MW project will generate enough electricity to meet power needs of about 320,000 German households.
Mr.Uwe Beckmeyer, Germany’s Federal Minister of Economy & Energy said “The first offshore wind farm installed by DONG Energy in Germany is a great success. Borkum Riffgrund 1 is an impressive example of just how fast offshore installations can now be installed. This translates into lower costs and is good news for consumers.”
“Borkum Riffgrund 1 is our first operational project in Germany and I’m very satisfied with the fact that we can now harvest the fruits of the investment we have put into this project. I’m also very pleased with the confidence that our joint venture partners have shown us by investing in this project,” said Mr.Thomas Thune Andersen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of DONG Energy A/S.
Mr.Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President of DONG Energy Wind Power said “I’m delighted about this partnership and it is a great pleasure to welcome GIP as a partner of DONG Energy. I am also very excited about the evolution of DONG Energy’s market leading partnership model to facilitate this innovative long term investment by German institutional investors into the offshore wind sector for the first time.”
With the addition of Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm, Germany now boasts 13 offshore wind farms. Earlier, Germany has promised to generate 100 % of its electricity supply from renewable sources by 2050.
