DCNS deploys OpenHydro's tidal turbine in France

France based Naval defence infrastructure and energy development company, DCNS, has deployed a tidal turbine developed by OpenHydro in the North Atlantic ocean off the coast of Brittany in France.

Located 16 kilometers off the coast and at water depths of 35 meters, the deployment of the 500 KW tidal turbine marks the installation of the first of two planned tidal turbines for the  Paimpol-Bréhat demonstration project.

The turbine converts hydrokinetic energy into direct current, which will be transported to the onshore substation close to the Arcouest Peninsula in Ploubazlanec. The turbine will be connected to the onshore electricity grid using a subsea converter developed by GE Electric.

Furthermore, as part of Paimpol-Bréhat tidal project, a second turbine is currently under development and is expected to be deployed soon.

France already boasts a commercial tidal turbine developed by Sabella in the Ushant island.
