Cowi to design India's first offshore wind farm

Lyngby based Danish engineering company, Cowi Inc has been granted the contract to design India’s first offshore wind farm off the coast of Gujarat in northwestern India.

The 50 MW project located in the Arabian sea is supported by the European Commission and is expected to be commissioned by 2019.

Mr. Marc Normann, Vice President Wind and M&E at COWIsaid “India has the capacity and the will needed to develop and establish an offshore wind industry. We're planning to design a farm generating somewhere in the range of 50 MW.”

Cowi will help the Indian authorities with electrical design, conceptual design of the foundation based on geotechnical studies and metocean analyses, and the layout of the wind farm.

This project comes in the wake of India’s pledge to generate 100 GW of clean energy by 2022 at COP21 summit  in Paris. The country has put in place an offshore wind policy to usher clean energy and fight the climate change.
