Wello's Penguin II Wave Energy Converter Tested in the Canary Islands

Finnish wave energy developer Wello Oy has started testing their wave energy converter prototype Penguin II off the coast of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands.

During this initial testing phase, the mechanical behavior of the device will be analysed, followed by a complete power take-off test.

Wello’s Penguin II converts waves to electricity with continuous rotational movement. Kinetic energy is directly captured by a generator that converts motion energy to electricity without hydraulics.

The testing of the 1:5 scaled device is expected to last till early next year, although the duration of the trial might be altered based on the obtained results.

Earlier, Welli Oy’s partner, Clean Energy From Ocean Waves (CEFOW) was granted €17 million under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme.
